Greg Kroah-Hartman Makes A Compelling Case For New Linux Kernel Drivers To Be Written In Rust
The ongoing discussion about integrating the Rust programming language into the Linux kernel is not settled, but momentum is clearly building behind this significant shift.
While not everyone in the kernel development community is fully on board, key figures like Linux creator Linus Torvalds and prominent maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman are strongly advocating for Rust’s adoption, signaling a potential new chapter for the world’s most ubiquitous operating system kernel.

Love to see Linus and GKH finally taking a good firm stance on this. The kernel needs this kind of leadership.

This is way too late to be called good leadership. Good leadership would have stepped in before things got out of hand.

Linus and Greg KH aren’t the maintainers who have to deal with bug reports or merge requests (unless one gets NACKed). They’re much freer to decide on principles than the overworked maintainers. I’m sure if the DMA subsystem could keep more than one full-time maintainer then Hellwig would be much more on board.
